The 7 most influential furniture designers ever

Influencing others is something that can only come from the best of all times. That's why we want you to meet the 7 most influential furniture designers ever.

Inspiration goes hand in hand with creativity. Those who lend their lives to creation whatever the area, are inspired by their field's iconic names. They study their work and cross it with their interests. That is how, for centuries, the pieces of furniture we know came to life.

These elements have been part of interior decoration from the 1980s trends to modern decoration. Inspiration after inspiration, designers created the furniture pieces we know today.

But who are the biggest names in the area? Who are the most iconic and influential furniture designers ever? That's what you'll find out now.

1. Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Originally from Scotland, Makintosh is one of the most influential furniture designers ever. That is a name that also stands out for appearing before the Modernist Movement.

And be disappointed if you think that his creations were the most complex. Makintosh created a simple design, which hardly used too many colors or patterns. With a highly refined practical sense, most of his work gathered inspiration from Art Noveau and Asian design.

2. Frank Lloyd Wright

It's one of the most known and famous names in the area. Frank Lloyd Wright was born in Wisconsin and had always been very attached to architecture. By the way, it was only after turning 20 years-old that he moved to Chicago where he started working in furniture design, along with other pioneers in the area.

Architecture never abandoned him, and it was possible to see a lot of this influence in the pieces he created. Wright related himself with suburban projects, where he found the needed inspiration for designing his furniture pieces.

3. Le Corbusier
"Le Corbusier" wasn't his real name. Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris was the actual name of the one who was the most significant architects and furniture designers ever.

Unlike most of his colleagues, Le Corbusier founded his own furniture design company in 1928. The collection was, for the time, very bold. Most were armchairs, designed in partnership with Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret.

4. Marcel Breuer

It's one of the best-known names of Bahaus, but he quickly left Germany. Marcel Breuer started working in Berlin, but in 1937 he flew to the United States of America where he opened his first company.

Breuer's fame soared after launching one of the most iconic furniture pieces ever: the Wassily Chair. The designer took his inspiration from Wassily Kandinsky (the Russian painter) to name his most famous creation.

That was one of his greatest successes for, at the time, breaking with robust and heavier furniture design. Breuer designed a leather chair with thin lines and a tubular system used today in most bicycles.

5. Charlotte Perriand

She's the first woman on this list of the most influential furniture designers ever. Charlotte Perriand worked closely with Le Corbusier, but he always prevented Charlotte from becoming his assistant.

But that didn't stop the designer from following her dreams as she continued to work closely with her "master." Her contribution was pivotal in the design of the famous designer's chair line.

6. Charles and Ray Eames
It's impossible to separate the names of the couple that dominated furniture design in the United States of America between the 50s and 70s. Their creative mind was so active that they never managed to stick to furniture design alone. Photography, film, and architecture were other areas on which they focused.

Charles and Ray Eames became better known for their famous Eames Lounge and Ottoman chair. A reclining, cushioned chair that included a footrest (independent from the chair itself). That is one of the most iconic pieces ever and still to this day, remains essential for creating a comfortable office.

7. Vico Magistretti

Vico Magistretti owes much of his inspiration to the work of architect Ernesto Nathan Rogers. That is how he began his career in industrial design, developing urban projects in Milan.

It was only later, in the 1950s, that he focused on furniture design. Magistretti began to collaborate with different companies and projects and continues, even today, seen as one of the most emblematic Italian designers ever. The numerous awards he received prove his work's excellence, very focused on lamp design. Part of his work is at MoMA in New York.

Furniture design has evolved with the contribution of these who were the great masters of the area. They were the ones responsible for influencing the work that other artists show nowadays.
